I was looking for a pair of noise-cancelling headphones for my long-haul flights. I'd been researching different styles: circumaural, earphones, in-ear earbuds, etc. I've used Bose and the noise-cancelling was impressive. Problem is, Bose - and most other noise-cancelling cans - is expensive. It's also a little bulky despite clever packaging.

Then I read about this Pioneer on wired.com and decided to give it a try. For $99, it's not too big of a risk.

Turns out, I was utterly impressed. On Airbus A330 and Boeing 747, my wife and I were able to enjoy the in-flight programming without having to turn the volume way up. Pressing (and holding) the "Monitor" button let us temporarily turn off noise-cancelling, and the difference is significant.

The in-ear design already naturally blocks good amount of noise, and I think Pioneer engineers have done a terrific job implementing active vibration control in this tiny package. The result was an aural experience I'd never had before with earphones on a plane.

Comfort was also a main consideration for me, and I was quite skeptical about the ear-canal-massaging/ear-wax-compacting-type headphones. This pair, tho', was surprisingly comfortable - so much so that I was not constantly reminded of the fact that there's something sitting in my ear canals. My wife fell asleep several times while using the 'phones. That says a lot.

The box also comes with cabin jack adapter, four sizes of earbud sleeves, a battery and a carrying pouch. Very convenient and compact. The battery easily lasted our entire itinerary covering a total of 24,000 miles, and the headphones were in use at least half the time.

All in all, it's a great buy.

Pros: Effective noise cancelling, good sound reproduction, comfortable, compact.

Cons: (Just a gripe) Having to keep holding the "monitor" button to temporarily turn off noise cancelling can get old.

We wanted to replace our big over-the-ear noise cancelling headphones with something more carry-on friendly for our upcoming 10 hour flight, so I ordered 3 different brands to compare. These Pioneer SE-NC31C-K were, hands down, the clear winner for us. To be honest, we haven't used them on the road yet, but my initial take on them is very positive. They seem to provide the most noise cancelling ability, they are very comfortable, and the controls are well-placed and easy to use. I like the "monitor" feature, and the wires on both ends are generous and quiet. Also, these were the easiest to tell the "right" from the "left" ear pieces...no small task with the others. The promise of 120 hours battery life is yet to be proven, but the other earbuds we tried were only promising 50 hours, so...120 seems better, yes? We are not audiophiles, but the sound quality from these earbuds seems good to us. We will use them primarily in flight for the noise cancelling ability...our main criteria here.

The other 2 brands in our unofficial comparison were the JVC HANCX78 (absolutely no noise cancelling ability that we could tell, and iffy sound quality), and the Audio-Technica ATH-ANC23 (noise cancellation was just OK and they were uncomfortable for me, I did like the volumn control, but item shipped was not as pictured). We are ordering another set of the Pioneer for our trip, so there won't be any fist fights for the "good pair".
